Abstract by Tenisha G.

The title of my science board is “How do Hurricanes Form.” I wanted to see if I could really build a homemade Hurricane model and actually see a hurricane before my eyes. This summer, I would sit and watch the news and hear about Hurricanes. I thought they just were waves that come on to land but I also wanted to understand how Hurricanes form after investigating.

The purpose of my science project is to find out if Hurricanes can form using a small model built by a child. A model was constructed to help me to understand Hurricanes and how they form.

I hypothesized that warm air and cold water mixed together in a closed model will produce a Hurricane. The warm water will not do anything inside the model. The hot water mixed with cold air will not produce hurricane.

Materials used were lumber, screws, saw, drill, steel bars, a nine inch pie pan, glass windows, light bulbs, ice cubes, salt water, hot water, cold water, and many more tools.

The result of my experiment shows that the warm air and the cold water were able to form quickly then the other types of waters. Warm water, and hot water mixed with cold air did not contribute to forming a hurricane.

My conclusion was right because the warm air and cold water form a hurricane faster and quicker. Right before my eyes, I saw the funnels forming which helped me understand hurricane lanes in America. I know that it takes special courage to live in the Mid-western states where we hear about disaster caused by hurricane. The salt water from the ocean and the temperature contributes to forming hurricanes. The eye of the hurricane if it is a 9 will destroy what’s in their path more than if the eye of the hurricane is 3 or 4. This was a great experiment and I know now to live in New Mexico.
