Background

The Coalition of Educators for Native American Children (CENAC) hosts a regional science fair for students in grades K-8 from the northern and southern pueblo BIA funded schools that serve our pueblo communities. The science fair is a two-day event, one for K-4 th grade projects and the second for 5 th–8 th grade projects. The fair offers great opportunities for our students through cash prizes and special awards. An added highlight is the Native Scientist Award that honors and respects the culture and traditions of native science in our communities.

The New Mexico Tribal Coalition through CENAC facilitates the annual regional fair and helps to support and promote native science in an inquiry and standards based format. The planning committee works year round to provide activities like the Science Blast Off in the summer, which helps teachers identify resources and to meet mentors to increase the quality and science content of the student projects. In the Fall, efforts are geared to recruit additional mentors to support teacher and student efforts. Also, judges are recruited and guidelines are established for scoring projects in the western science and native science categories. Please visit the links to explore and support our regional science fair.
