Abstract By Dominique S.
Grade 5

The science project is about “Which herbal shampoo has the most pH balance?”

The question asked is “Will the yucca root provide a higher range of pH balance?”

The purpose is to find the measurement of acid in herbal shampoo and the yucca root.

My hypothesis is that Alberto VO5 herbal shampoo would have a higher pH measurement than Suave Natural Herbal Shampoo and the yucca root.

The materials I used were Alberto VO5 Herbal Shampoo, Suave Naturals Herbal Shampoo, yucca root, pH indicator strips (pH range:4.5-10), (4.5 low acids, 7.0 is neutral point, 10.0 high acids), paper, pencils.

The procedure went like this; I found a yucca plant and dug out the root. Next, I wiped of the dirt from the yucca plant and take inside my house. Then I cut off the outer shin from the root. I then collected only the inside of the root. I got the paper plate. With a pencil, draw 2 equal parts on the paper plate. Write the type of shampoo in each part of the plate. Take the inside of the root and run water over it. Rub the yucca root with both hands under the water until it gets soapy. Place the yucca root on the paper plate. Use one pH strip to test each shampoo and the yucca root. Wait ten minutes for the results. Check the pH measurement on the color coded chart.

The results shown in the graph is that Suave Natural Herbal Shampoo pH is 5.5, the Alberto VO5 Herbal Shampoo pH is 5.0, and the yucca root pH is 6.5. In conclusion my hypothesis was wrong. I thought that Alberto Vo5 Herbal Shampoo would have the highest pH. In the end, the yucca root had the highest pH measurement than the store bought shampoos.
