Debbie Scruggs

Principal Investigator

NMTC's Principal Investigator, Debbie Scruggs, was born and raised in Colorado Springs, CO. She moved to NM in 1991 with her son, Brad, to work at Zia Day School, where she taught grades 2 - 6 for a total of eight years. In 1999, Debbie began working with all of the CENAC schools through various reform efforts. Debbie, along with a team of teachers from each of the CENAC schools, applied for a Rural Systemic Initiative (RSI) grant from the National Science Foundation. In 2001, Santa Fe Indian School received a $2.5 million five-year RSI grant on behalf of the CENAC schools. As PI for the project, Debbie enjoys her work with schools in math and science reform. She travels from her home office in Albuquerque to the schools regularly to support their reform efforts. She also teaches challenging math classes for the CENAC teachers to increase their math content knowledge and improve their instructional strategies.  In her spare time, she enjoys karaoke and sand volleyball.
